Last year, more than 10,000 citizens of Oklahoma City hit the streets and helped pick up more than 60 tons of litter. It was all part of the regular Litter Blitz
program organized by OKC Beautiful
, the City of Oklahoma City and the Great American Clean-Up.
OKC Beautiful makes it easy to participate. Not only do they distribute free trash bags and gloves to participating organizations, businesses and individuals, they also offer free seminars about the impact of litter on the community and safety tips for picking up litter.
Last year's Little Blitz, held in April 2011, had a focus on the number-one source of littler: cigarette butts. "People don't look at cigarette butts as litter," Lisa Synar, executive director of OKC Beautiful, told The Oklahoman
last year. "They think they've done their job if they've smashed it on the ground and got the fire out."
This year's Blitz will once again take place in April. Everyone signing up can pick the day, time and location of where they want to do their service. Once events are registered with OK Beautiful, the organization will make arrangements for Waste Management to come by and pick up any bagged trash.
OK Beautiful also offers numerous other programs to promote community improvement and stewardship and help conserve public and private green spaces throughout Oklahoma City. Visit their website for more information.
