Shaggy Speaks Out on Climate Change

Stephanie Valera, December 30, 2009

Grammy Award-winning reggae artist Shaggy (aka Orville Burrell), one of several music stars who made an appearance at the Copenhagen climate change conference, has gone green and announced plans to help increase awareness of climate change.

During his performance at the `Seal the Deal: Dance for Climate Change` concert held in Copenhagen, Shaggy said he hopes to encourage a more secure climate future, by raising public awareness about how a changing climate could devastate people`s lives and livelihoods.

"People need to be educated on it [climate change]," Shaggy said in an interview backstage prior to his performance. " I myself need to be educated a lot more. It is the more I go along with it that I start to realize the severity of it and the importance of it. So if I can use my talent and my voice to really raise people`s awareness where this is concerned, then why not? It is all for a good cause."

The Jamaican American "Boombastic" singer, pointed out that pop stars could draw attention to social issues based on the popularity of their music. "It is easy to do a song about it (climate change); it is not something I would rule out," he said, adding that artistes were a powerful influence. "This is a little bit of entertainment. If you get big artistes on stage then you get big media and big media carry big coverage and big coverage can get the word spread for this particular cause."
