Samsung Expands Line of Super-Green Hard Drives

John Platt, February 19, 2010

My computer had a little problem recently, requiring I replace its hard drive. Luckily for me, Samsung just expanded its EcoGreen line of environmentally friendly hard drives, so I knew I could pick up a new hard drive that would benefit not just my ailing computer, but also the environment.

Samsung's new EcoGreen F3EG line replaces an older EcoGreen line, this time offering greater capacity while still using less energy than competing hard drives. According to Samsung, the F3EG uses 40 percent less power while idle and 10 percent less when it is in read and write modes.

Samsung calls the tech behind the EcoGreen line "EcoTriangle" -- meaning it offers 1) low power use, 2) low-noise components, and 3) no halogen content. This last part means it's easier to recycle at the end of its product life-cycle and is less likely to send toxic chemicals into landfills if its is not disposed of properly.

You can find full information about the F3EG line at Samsung's website, or order one from places like NewEgg.com.
