Love Sudoku? How About Trees?

John Platt, February 09, 2011

Do you love Sudoku? How about the environment? Well now you can combine your two passions with the Green Edition Sudoku mobile app.

This new game from Mobile Deluxe is available for Blackberry, iPhone and other smartphones. The $2.99 purchase price can be put toward the planting of three real trees through the Trees for the Future organization. This great nonprofit helps communities around the world plant trees, using programs in sustainable agroforestry to empower rural groups to restore tree cover to their lands. Planting trees protects the environment and helps to preserve traditional livelihoods and cultures for generations.

Planting trees in agroforestry systems provides a myriad of benefits, such as food; forage for animals; sustainable fuel wood and construction materials; increased agricultural yields; improved water infiltration and aquifer recharge; and protection of soils from wind and water erosion.  However, planting trees can be difficult when the canopy has disappeared, topsoil has been eroded, and the climate and growing conditions have changed. Trees for the Future is also active locally, educating students and communities about global issues, our role in the environment, and energy efficiency.

So boost your brain and a greener environment by playing Sudoku. You know you want to.
