Kids, Roar for Big Cats this Halloween

John Platt, October 13, 2011

This Halloween, your kids can dress up for a cause and help save big cats like lions, tigers and cheetahs from extinction. It's all part of the Cause An Uproar campaign from Nat Geo WILD and National Geographic Kids, which this year is encouraging trick-or-treaters to collect change along with their candy to support National Geographic's Big Cats Initiative, an effort to halt the decline of big cats in the wild.

Participating is easy. You can either go online to print out labels to create your own change-collection can or you can get a free "Trick-or-Treat for Big Cats" collection box from Pottery Barn Kids stores. Your school might even have these supplies on hand if they're participating -- and in they aren't yet, it's not too late: teacher and parent resources can be found here.

The Nat Geo site also has instructions on how to make your own lion mask, carve a lion jack-o-lantern, or make other cat-inspired costumes. You can also download certificates of appreciation or read more information about endangered lions and cheetahs.

All kids who participate in this program are eligible to receive thank-you gifts such as magazine subscriptions, apparel and digital downloads. Funds collected must be turned in by November 30 to be eligible for these thank-you gifts.

Why big cats? "We no longer have the luxury of time when it comes to big cats," said National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence Dereck Joubert, who, with National Geographic, launched the Big Cats Initiative. "They are in such a downward spiral that if we hesitate now, we will be responsible for extinctions across the globe. If there was ever a time to take action, it is now."

Halloween is always fun, but this year it can also mean something more. Get out there and roar and help make a difference.
